Downingtown School District Elementary Schools Pitch in to help Second Chance Toys During Earth Week!

The week prior to Spring Break, students at Beaver Creek, Pickering Valley, Shamona Creek, Springton Manor, Uwchlan Hills and West Bradford Elementary Schools and the Central Office of Downingtown School District teamed up with Second Chance Toys of PA and collected over 1,000 gently used plastic toys. 1-800-Got-Junk? volunteered its resources to transport the District's donations on Thursday April 14^th to three head start programs in Coatesville.  Thanks for the great job, everyone!

Rebekah Sills Lamm Joins Second Chance Toys as Development Director (@secondchancetoy)

 
We are absolutely trilled to have Rebekah Sills Lamm join the Second Chance Toys team to help us focus on areas of growth and development. Rebekah has worked in the non-profit world since completing graduate school in 2007, specifically in education. She has served as a community trainer, youth advocate, and community liaison, which makes Second Chance Toy (SCT) a perfect fit for her passions and her background. Rebekah loves the dual giving aspect of SCT allowing people to help the environment and children simultaneously. She looks forward to helping SCT grow into a national organization and reach its amazing potential.

Do you KNOW ANYONE that would like to put their smarts to use by getting involved with us as a volunteer. Second Chance Toys is a 501c3 charitable organization that recycles gently used plastic toys by donating them to children in need. We are looking for volunteers who could help out with any of the following areas of need:

• Identify companies that could serve as national drop off locations
• Research foundations that have grant money we could apply for
• Organize SCT information on Excel spreadsheets
• Make calls to organizations during toy drives
• Research Mommy Bloggers and Moms’ Clubs
• Help us connect with Girl or Boy Scouts of America regional or national headquarters.

There was lots of holiday cheer in the air at Our Lady of Hope Church on December 23.  The kids of Logan Annex Head Start received lots of shiny gifts compliments of Second Chance Toys of PA, and had personal “sit-downs” with Santa Claus too!!!  That is what we call a very special day indeed!

What a great time on December 22.  The kids dressed up and performed in true holiday style for friends and family.  Second Chance Toys provided wonderful toys for every single child just in time for the holidays.  And -- Santa even made a surprise appearance too!   A tremendous time was had by all!

Mill Creek Elementary School Students Conduct Amazing Toy Drive For Second Consecutive Year!

 

 
Don't mess with those kids and families from Mill Creek Elementary School in Warrington, PA.  They know how to organize a toy drive!  Do they ever!  They filled our 15 x 15 cubic yard 1-800-GOT-JUNK? truck up to the gills with gently used plastic toys; great toys to be recycled and distributed to literally hundreds and hundreds of kids in our community just in time for the holidays.  That is community and holiday spirit at its best.  Thanks to Principal Leonard Schwartz, Home & School leader, Stephanie McDonald and all the great students who helped make the December 3-10 toy drive such a resounding success for the second year in a row.  Some say "Ho Ho Ho" at this time of the year!  We simply say "Wow, you are the greatest!!

Way to Go Girl Scout Troop 21808 and Warwick Elementary School!

 
 
Talk about a team effort.  Led by Girl Scout Troop 21808, the students, families and Parent-Teachers-Organization of Warwick Elementary School in Warwick, PA orchestrated a very successful toy drive and collection in support of Second Chance Toys of PA from November 22 to December 1, 2010. All banned together to help many needy children in the Bucks County and surrounding areas hopefully enjoy the holidays a little bit more this year.  Many boxes and bags were filled with reusable plastic toys collected by the Girls Scouts at the school. This is the first year the scouts have coordinated with Second Chance Toys and we are very proud of them for their truly outstanding efforts. They are helping to make a positive difference in the lives of other children and our environment!

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Fills The Truck Again

 
The great kids and families of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Doylestown, PA organized another successful toy collection on November 20, 2010 in support of Second Chance Toys of PA.  Once again, our 1800GOTJUNK truck was filled with quality, polished-up toys that will make hundreds of deserving children in our community very happy this holiday season.  This is the third year in a row that Mount Carmel has supported Second Chance Toys of PA activities.  We are not only impressed by this consistent effort, but very grateful indeed!  Thanks to all who pitched in. Special thanks to Laurie Frayne who coordinates these activities at the church and to Eric Blum from 1800GOTJUNK who helps us get the toys where they need to go.  

Earth Week 2010 Toy Drives a Big Success for Second Chance Toys of PA

With the continued partnership of the wonderful team at 1-800-Got-Junk?, Second Chance Toys of PA sponsored a number of toys collections throughout the Greater Philadelphia community during Earth Week 2010.  Toy drives were sponsored by several companies including TargetRx, Inc., VMS Movement Specialists LLC, Take Care Health, Inc.  In addition, Oxford Valley Mall and Yardley Community Borough pitched in to lend a helping hand.  Best of all, three local elementary schools got into the game with enthusiastic groups of local kids working together to shine up hundreds and hundreds of beautiful gently used plastic toys for deserving kids in our area.  Hats off to the children, faculty, staff and parents at Gladwyne Elementary, Penn Valley Elementary and Lower Merion Elementary schools!  What a great job by all!  Recycling the toys and helping the kids in our area is what it is all about!  Thank you!!

Har Zion Temple Joins Second Chance Toys of PA for MLK Day Toy Drive

Hundreds of toys were collected by the hard-working volunteers of Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley, PA on January 18 in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.  The gently used plastic toys were donated to Second Chance Toys of PA for distribution to deserving children throughout our community.  Thanks to all the wonderful people at Har Zion who made this day possible.  Your efforts will make our environment cleaner and many children very happy indeed!  Way to go! 

Logan Annex Head Start Celebrates Toy Give-away with Second Chance Toys of PA

 

 
All the great kids at Logan Annex Head Start went home with “just like new” toys on December 22, compliments of Second Chance Toys of PA.  Santa Claus personally visited with each and every child and there were plenty of smiles all around.  Second Chance Toys of PA was also able to provide Logan Annex Head Start with four, much needed, new computer systems (one for each classroom), kindly donated by TargetRx, Inc.  Logan lost all their computer equipment when their original location burnt to the ground earlier this year.  It is tremendous to help such a great group of teachers, children and families get back on their feet!  Happy holidays!

The staff and children of Trinidad Head Start on West Sedgeley Ave. in North Philadelphia put on a great holiday songfest on Tuesday, December 22.  Second Chance Toys of PA staff were on hand for the festivities and helped out by making sure that each and every child went home with a great holiday toy!  Santa made an appearance and a GREAT time was had by all!  Ho!  Ho!  Ho!

Mill Creek Elementary School Toy Drive Fills The Truck!

 
 

The holiday toy drive conducted by students, teachers, staff and parents of Mill Creek Elementary School in Warrington, PA literally filled the Second Chance Toys truck (lent by our partners at 1-800-Got-Junk?) on Friday December 11.  What an amazing haul by this spirited community.  Toys collected were distributed to Bucks County Head Start in Morrisville, PA, the Samuel Everitt and Walter Miller Elementary Schools, in Levittown, PA, and Little Kids College and the Howley School in Trenton, NJ.  Hey Mill Creek -- Thanks for doing so much to help so many kids and protect our environment!

Feltonville Head Start Stocks Up on Second Chance Toys

The teachers and staff at Feltonville Head Start on Rising Sun Boulevard in Philadelphia helped Second Chance Toys and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? personnel unload hundreds of great toys for the kids.  The toys will be distributed during the week before Christmas.  Ho! Ho! Ho!

Logan Head Start Receives a Timely Gift from Second Chance Toys of PA

 
For those who may not know, the wonderful Logan Head Start location on Lindley Ave. burnt to the ground earlier this year. Now temporarily relocated in Our Lady of Hope Church in North Philadelphia, the wonderful teachers, kids and families have stayed together but need our help. Second Chance Toys delivered loads and loads of great toys to the more than 80 children at the center, which will help make the holiday season a little brighter.

Bucks County Head Start Receives More Toys for Kids at Nine Centers

Second Chance Toys of PA delivered hundreds of toys to the headquarters of Bucks County Head Start in Morrisville, PA.  This center is the hub of the 9 Head Start locations in the county.  Toys will now be distributed to the other Bucks County locations, so the kids can receive holiday gifts just in time!

Toys galore were delivered to the 3 and 4 year old children at Little Kids College on Monday, November 30.  Great kids and great teachers and all are happy!

Second Chance Toys of PA Surpasses 6,000 Toys Recycled

With continued community support and unbelievable support from the great people of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, Second Chance Toys of PA continues to grow at a grass roots level. Local churches, synagogues, families and friends have helped Cara (age 16) and Kyle Scott (age 18) continue to collect more gently used plastic toys, and recycle them, by delivering the toys “good as new” to deserving kids in our community.  The generosity of so many is spreading joy to lots of young faces and that is important in these trying times.  Thanks to YOU, Second Chance Toys of PA has now surpassed 6,000 toys collected with many donations planned in the weeks ahead in North Philadelphia, Bucks County, Trenton, and beyond to coincide with the holiday season!

Second Chance Toys of PA Gears Up for Holiday Drive

For the past two years, teenagers Kyle and Cara Scott and their family have spearheaded the growth of Second Chance Toys of PA.  Their grassroots efforts have paid off.  Teaming with local families, schools, churches, companies and most recently the Philadelphia Phillies, the Scotts have now recycled over 4,000 gently used plastic toys and distributed them to young, deserving children in our community.  It is a win for the environment and for young kids who need and deserve the toys to learn and have fun.

For the 2009 holiday season they are working with a number of local groups to collect gently used plastic toys. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Doylestown, PA is doing a toy drive on November 28.  This is the second time they have supported Second Chance Toys of PA with a holiday drive.  Mill Creek Elementary School and Har Zion Temple will also be hosting toy drives in December.

Second Chance Toys Celebrates Earth Day and Week of the Young Child

Over 300 youngsters received great toys from Second Chance Toys of PA as Head Start celebrated both Earth Day 2009 and "Week of the Young Child" at Head Start headquarters at 440 North Broad Street in Philadelphia on Friday, April 24.  A wonderful time was had by all!

The weather was wet but it did not dampen the spirits of the Second Chance Toys of PA family and partners, the Philadelphia Phillies.  In celebration of Earth Day 2009, the intrepid SCT squad was on hand at the ballpark to collect toys from Phillies fans.  Toy collection boxes were set up at seven entrances to the ballpark and hundreds of toys were collected for local children.  Thanks to the Phillies and their fans for helping the environment and local children in need!

 

 

Second Chance Toys of PA Toy Donations Top 4,000!

Logan Head Start Students Receive Great Toys During Earth Week

Second Chance Toys of PA paid a visit to the seventy-two children at Logan Head Start on Thursday, April 23, and the kids were thrilled.  With the transportation help of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, a truckload of great plastic toys were delivered to the children.  It was like Christmas in April!  Lots of happy faces on the day following Earth Day 2009.

Second Chance Toys and the Philadelphia Phillies Team Up to help Kids AND Celebrate Earth Day

(Philadelphia, PA) To mark Earth Day, The Phillies have found a unique way to help the environment and help disadvantaged children at the same time. The team approached the non-profit group Second Chance Toys of PA to jointly collect gently-used plastic toys during The Phillies home game against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 22, 2009 (Earth Day).

Fans attending that game are encouraged to bring ‘gently used’ plastic toys in good working condition and drop them off in specially marked bins at seven entrances into the Citizens Bank Park. The toys will be donated to charities and centers for children throughout the community.

The high-profile collection is expected to net hundreds of toys that would have likely otherwise ended up in the landfill. It’s a win for less fortunate children and it’s a win for the environment.

 

“We are overjoyed that The Phillies share our commitment to helping the environment and kids,” says Kyle Scott, 17, who started up the Pennsylvania chapter of Second Chance Toys with his sister Cara, 16, who adds, “the kids will be thrilled to get toys from Phillies fans.”

Cara and Kyle have donated nearly 3,000 toys to charities since starting the local chapter two years ago. Second Chance Toys frequently enlists the help of local junk removal company 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to transport the toys to children’s organizations throughout the area.

 

Some of the toys collected will be donated on Thursday, April 23 at 10am at Logan Head Start (1700 Lindley Ave.Philadelphia, PA 19141).  Media wanting to attend the event are asked to contact Craig Scott (details below).

Holiday Donations Boost Second Chance Toys of PA Above 2,700!

The grassroots Second Chance Toys of PA initiative is taking off.  This holiday season, Kyle and Cara Scott's young organization (barely 2 years in operation) is donating another 1,200 recycled plastic toys to children throughout Bucks County, PA, North Philadelphia and Mercer County, NJ.  Donations are being made to 20 Head Start Centers and inner city after school programs in the area. The timing could not be better given the tough economic climate and the growing number of disadvantaged children in the region.  Pictured below are just a few of the happy kids and teachers who appreciated the great holiday gifts which would not have been possible without the generosity of so many in our community.

 

 

 

Trinidad Head Start Gives New Toys a Second Chance!

For the 114 kids at Trinidad Head Start, Second Chance Toys of PA has become a good friend.  All the children at this North Philly facility received toy donations from Second Chance Toys just in time for the holidays.  At a rollicking party on Tuesday, December 23, the kids and their teachers gathered to thank Second Chance Toys of PA co-founders, Kyle and Cara Scott (holding the "Thank You" sign in the rear of the photo) and enjoy their "new" toys which are actually refurbished and recycled plastic toys that look and work "good as new".
